Urban Creatures
Nature in cities is fascinating, whether it’s urban gardening, bee-keeping on rooftops, vertical gardens on the side of estate buildings or creatures living wild alongside people. Flocks of parakeets fly wild in local parks. Cheeky scruffy starlings run among people along the street. Fox cubs playing in gardens. A poor mangy old fox on the pavement looking for scraps. Hordes of pigeons and crows in the parks. They all adapted to living in cities, and my slipware urban creatures are meant to reflect this.
I hand build birds and other creatures using white earthenware and red terracotta clays, and decorate using traditional slipware techniques or printing on the clay. The pieces are glazed using either a clear or traditional honey glaze to 1100C.
